Layered Tower Structuring Agent

Maps the layered and quota-shared program, derives the net line after treaty and facultative, and tests the placement against treaty exclusions and accumulation limits.

Everything else on this desk is opinion. The net line is arithmetic: primary, every excess layer, each carrier's signed share and attachment point, minus only what the treaty genuinely responds to, which on a petrochemical occupancy under a treaty that excludes it comes to zero. A facultative layer quoted but not bound shows as unbound in every view, because a cession assumed rather than placed is how a carrier learns at claim that its retention was a fiction.

Desk workflow

Clear the submission for conflict, appetite, paper and authority; build the technical file the line demands, whether that is a contractor's work-in-progress schedule or an applicant's control evidence; structure the layers and derive the net line after treaty and facultative; then read the wording queued for issuance against what was quoted and what is filed, before the underwriter holding written authority commits.

Systems and capabilities involved

  • Ceded reinsurance system

treaty terms, cessions of record, and facultative placement status

  • Treaty wording library

exclusions, per-risk limits, and reinstatement terms by contract year

  • Reinsurance placement platform

Verisk Sequel, Whitespace, and PPL placement and signing records

  • Net line calculation

  • Accumulation agent

What this role gives and receives

Capabilities offered

Tower and net line worksheet

Builds the layer and share map for a placement and derives the retained line after treaty and facultative cessions.

Receives:
Requested participation, layer structure, treaty terms for the contract year, facultative quotes, and the accumulation position
Returns:
Layer map with attachment points, treaty response by peril, net line with unbound cessions marked, and accumulation impact

Delegates

Catastrophe & Accumulation Monitor

Test the proposed net line against per-risk and catastrophe accumulation appetite. Trigger: A participation is proposed on a risk in a zone, occupancy, or dependency cluster the book already carries. Returns: Accumulation position, remaining appetite, and any breach of the per-risk or zonal limit.

Delegates

Reinsurance Structure Orchestrator

Arrange the facultative support the gross line depends on. Trigger: The treaty excludes the risk, or the requested line exceeds treaty capacity. Returns: Facultative quotes, terms, contingencies, and binding status by reinsurer.

Context

What the role needs to do the work

Current work
Layer map, signed shares, attachment points, treaty response by peril and occupancy, quoted and bound facultative, and the derived net line.
Prior interactions
Prior years' structures on this account, which layers changed hands, and how earlier facultative placements finished.
Policies and reference
Treaty terms and exclusions by contract year, per-risk and catastrophe accumulation appetite, and ceded authority limits.
Working method
Net line derivation and reconciliation against the ceded system of record.

Illustrative workflow

How the work moves

Starting point

A broker asks for a $50 million participation in the $100 million excess of $50 million layer on a refinery tower, and the property per-risk treaty excludes petrochemical occupancies.

  1. 01

Build the layer map from primary through the top of the tower with each carrier's signed share and attachment point.

  2. 02

Test the risk against the treaty's occupancy exclusion and credit no treaty cession, citing the clause that removes it.

  3. 03

Reconcile the derived net line against the ceded system's record for the same risk and surface the $4 million difference rather than reconciling it away.

  4. 04

Mark the reinsurance broker's facultative indication as unbound and show the net line both with and without it.

Result

Tower and net-line worksheet showing a gross line that only stands if the facultative binds, held for the Chief Underwriting Officer on the gross line and the Chief Reinsurance Officer on the cession.

Checks and boundaries

What must be tested or reviewed

  1. 01A facultative indication contingent on a wording the primary has already promised the client is never counted as placed capacity; the contingency is named and routed to wording control.
  2. 02Given a per-risk treaty that excludes the subject occupancy, no treaty cession is credited against that risk and the exclusion is cited by clause rather than the retention being reduced silently.
  3. 03The derived net line reconciles to the ceded system's record for the same risk, and any difference is surfaced with both figures shown.
  4. 04A facultative layer that is quoted but not bound appears as unbound in every view, including the one-line summary the underwriter reads first.

Human authority

  • The Chief Underwriting Officer commits the gross line the carrier offers.
  • The Chief Reinsurance Officer or the ceded authority holder binds every cession, treaty and facultative alike, and the resulting record has to survive risk-transfer testing under SSAP No. 62R.
