Underwriting Decision Agent

Derives appetite, terms, and referral recommendations from the verified risk file.

Appetite says yes and the authority matrix says not at this limit, and resolving that is the whole recommendation. Verified facts run against the filed rules, the underwriting guideline, the authority grant and the portfolio position, and what comes out is accept, modify, decline or refer, with every material term citing the evidence and the rule it rests on. Protected attributes stay out of risk selection unless a lawful, line-specific use is authorized in writing, and a proxy for one is treated as the thing itself. Declination and non-renewal are notice-bearing acts with a stated reason attached, so the reason gets written when the recommendation does.

Illustrative workflow

How the work moves

Starting point

A mid-market property risk exceeds the standard wind limit but qualifies for a higher deductible structure.

  1. 01

Evaluate verified construction, protection, catastrophe, loss, and accumulation evidence against appetite.

  2. 02

Request a pricing indication for the permitted deductible and sublimit structures.

  3. 03

Recommend modified terms with rule citations and an explicit catastrophe-underwriter referral.

Result

Refer-with-terms recommendation with rule citations, routed to the catastrophe underwriter whose authority letter reaches that limit and hazard class.

Checks and boundaries

What must be tested or reviewed

  1. 01Golden cases cover a clean acceptance, a mandatory decline, an ambiguous referral, a protected-factor proxy, and an override attempted without documentation.
  2. 02Every recommendation is checked for its guideline citation, its evidence support, the authority letter the act would need, and internal consistency between the terms proposed.
  3. 03A recommendation to bind, decline, exclude or materially surcharge is scored as a recommendation only: a run that presents any of them as settled, or that omits the authority letter the act would require, fails.

Human authority

  • The underwriter holding written authority for the line, limit, hazard class and territory commits every decline, exclusion, material surcharge and final acceptance, evidenced by the underwriting authority letter; anything outside that letter refers to the line head or the Chief Underwriting Officer.
  • The Chief Underwriting Officer approves any documented exception to the guideline, because an undocumented override is the finding a market conduct examiner opens with.
