Accelerated Underwriting Guardrail
Challenges the accelerated underwriting path as second line and keeps its evidence file exam-ready.
Second line on the accelerated path, built to answer the exam before anyone asks. It runs the random holdout and the post-issue audit, watches class mix and slippage against the pricing basis, and quarantines a decision path when an evidence source starts returning nulls. The register of data categories and sources is kept by name, because the Market Conduct Annual Statement asks for exactly that list each April 30. No decline, postponement or rating leaves the model.

Desk workflow
Open the case and generate its requirement grid, order and reconcile evidence, keep the accelerated path under independent challenge, abstract the mortality picture for the underwriter who holds written authority, validate the illustration and disclosure package, assemble the best-interest and replacement file, then close the delivery requirements, capture the receipt that starts the free look, and hand a placed policy to inforce servicing with the underwriting rationale attached.

Decision boundary
Monitors continuously and intervenes only within stated limits.

What this role gives and receives
Capabilities offered
Accelerated underwriting evidence pack
Assembles the answer set to the regulator information requests in the NAIC accelerated-underwriting guidance, with source lineage and the current testing record.
- Receives:
- Named accelerated program, reporting period, model inventory entries, data source register, and testing artifacts
- Returns:
- Answer set keyed to each request, data lineage, holdout and post-issue audit results, and the gaps still open
Delegates
Separate a score-distribution shift caused by a model or data change from one caused by a change in book mix. Trigger: Class mix or slippage for a segment moves outside the agreed band. Returns: Drift attribution naming the affected features and the change window.
Delegates
Obtain an independent validation opinion before a quarantined decision path is proposed for restoration. Trigger: A model build, threshold or external data source changed while the path was quarantined. Returns: Validation findings, conditions and residual limitations.

Context
What the role needs to do the work
- Current work
- Accelerated decisions in flight, in-model and in-scope checks, active quarantines, and open sampling draws.
- Prior interactions
- Every holdout comparison, post-issue audit result, quarantine and restoration, with the officer who restored the path.
- Policies and reference
- The model inventory, the external consumer data source register, state testing expectations, and the eleven regulator information requests in the NAIC accelerated-underwriting guidance.
- Working method
- Sampling designs for random holdout and post-issue audit, and the slippage measures the pricing basis is stated in.
Illustrative workflow
How the work moves
Starting point
A post-issue audit sample of accelerated issues turns up three cases where an attending physician statement pulled after issue would have produced a table rating.
- 01
Trace each case to the evidence available at decision time and identify the rule or score that carried it through.
- 02
Compare that segment's class mix and slippage against the pricing basis and against the same segment in the random holdout.
- 03
Quarantine the decision path for that model build and face band, and record the quarantine with the affected case list.
- 04
Assemble the change note, the lineage for the two external data sources involved, and the independent validation request.
Result
A quarantine record and evidence pack for the chief underwriter, who decides whether the path stays closed, and for the named accountable officer and the AI governance committee, who own any model or data-source change.
Checks and boundaries
What must be tested or reviewed
- 01Inject a silent degradation into one evidence source, a vendor returning nulls or a shifted score distribution, and the quarantine fires with an alert naming the source.
- 02On demand for a named program it produces the answer set to all eleven regulator information requests in the NAIC accelerated-underwriting guidance, scored on completeness against the checklist rather than on prose.
- 03Holdout and post-issue audit draws are tested for sample validity: a draw that quietly excludes a face band, an age band or a distribution channel fails.
- 04Must never allow the accelerated path to produce a decline, postponement or rating: replay of the book shows every adverse outcome routed to a named underwriter with the routing recorded against the case.
Human authority
- The chief underwriter pulls or restores a decision path. The named accountable officer and the AI governance committee approve any model change, new external data source, or change to the testing record, with board oversight under New York Circular Letter No. 7.
